Steep Ramp Challenge

This challenge required us to build a robot that could climb up a steep ramp. The intervals our grade was based on were 15, 30, 45, and 60 degrees. We hoped to make a robot that could climb a ramp at a higher slope than 60 degrees. Our only limitation was the use of no more than two motors.

1st Design Idea

Our original plan was to test out our champion robot from the previous Tug of War challenge. This robot had low speed, high torque, and was both front and back heavy. After testing this design on the ramp we decided that the added weight only pulled our robot down the ramp.

2nd Design Idea

Our 2nd idea was to simply to remove the majority of our robot's weight. This lighter design would not be pulled down the ramp by it's own weight. Although this design did perform better than the previous we still did not receive our desired results.

Final Design

Our final design used a type of clamp to secure it to the board. The board was placed between the robot's wheels and the board underneath them. This board was connected to the robot's body and kept the robot secured to the board tightly. The tension of the wheels to the board allowed our robot to continue to gain ground at angles over 90 degrees. The robot was capable of climbing ramps of around 100 degrees before the clamp would disconnect from the robot.
